The promotion
of good will among all nations is at the center of IGAR's
activities. In the present constellation of international
affairs, Americans and Germans can further this goal by knowing
and understanding each other more thoroughly, expanding the
common ground for fruitful cooperation.
In
1983, scholarly conferences throughout the United States commemorated
the Tricentennial Year of German immigration to America. IGAR
was established to continue their work.
Seminars,
discussion groups, and lecture series arranged by IGAR draw
on local, national and international resources of participating
institutions. Visiting scholars highlight the programs.
IGAR functions
as a forum for scholars and artists, for public officials,
journalists, and business executives as well as all interested
citizens to discuss German-American affairs in:
- History
- Political
Theory
- Law
- Economics
and Business
- Language
and Literature
- Arts
and Sciences
The Institute
serves as a source of information on these subjects. It provides
material for instruction in high schools, colleges, and universities.
IGAR offers an impartial platform for debate and exchange
of divergent opinions, confident that friendship between the
United States and Germany is fostered by candid discussion,
and that sympathetic under-standing is based upon the knowledge
of facts.
Lecturers
for IGAR programs, not only from the United States and the
German speaking countries but from all parts of the world,
are selected for their expertise and ability to relate to
the American public.
